WORKING WITH HISTORIC KEYBOARDS: ORGAN, HARPSICHORD, PEDAL HARPSICHORD & CLAVICHORD, PEDAL PIANO, HISTORIC ROMANTIC PIANO (Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Chopin…on a marvelous newly restored Blüthner 1857, inaugurated in Gewandhaus/Leipzg in June 2013).
Facultatively: IDIOMATIC IMPROVISATION ON HISTORIC KEYBOARDS!
Special topic for organists: HIDDEN AUTHENTICITY – Northgerman pedaliter repertoire & Bach between organ and domestic pedal instruments” : In a large part of our “organ repertoire” there is an important trait of “hidden authenticity” which can be explored by using the so called organ related keyboards: pedal harpsichord & clavichord, pedal piano…For many German “free pedaliter-compositions” of the 17th and early 18th cent. we can’t be sure at all: are these “organ works” or rather results of spending time at the pedal clavichord & harpsichord with their idiom? Also during the 19th century, works by Schumann, Liszt, Brahms, Franck….reveal an important additional dimension when explored and performed on a pedal pianoforte – the idiomatic roots of this music often came from the pianistic world.
At this Masterclass in a breathtakingly idyllic and relaxing ambient, we will explore several historic keyboard instruments from a renaissance virginal all the way to the romantic Flügel…as well as (facultative) learn to improvise idiomatically in various styles.
